Statement from Premier regarding college funding in federal budget

Published 19/03/2019

Premier Sandy Silver released the following statement:

Today’s announcement of up to $26 million for the construction of a science building at Yukon College is very positive news for the future of Yukon University.

Our government has made it a strategic priority to ensure our education system achieves solid outcomes that meet Yukon’s social, economic and community goals.

This includes a commitment to life-long learning and the transition to Yukon University further advances opportunities available in Yukon and the North.

Today’s announcement brings Yukon College one step closer to this goal.

I would like to thank MP Larry Bagnell for jointly supporting our efforts to advocate for the advancement of Yukon College. Thank you to Prime Minister Trudeau, Minister Morneau and Minister LeBlanc for supporting and believing in enhancing educational opportunities in our territory through this substantial contribution.

We have travelled to Ottawa on a number of occasions to discuss Yukon priorities and the advancement of Yukon University has been a topic on many bilateral meeting agendas.

Congratulations to the team at Yukon College for all the work they have put to this project.
